about.
Murf Studio is a comprehensive text-to-speech platform that allows creators to generate voiceovers, edit timelines, add music, and sync videos within a single workspace. However, one essential layer of audio storytelling was missing: sound effects. This gap often forced users to switch to external tools, breaking their flow and limiting Murf’s potential as a complete editing solution. My role was to design an integrated sound effects experience that felt natural inside the existing studio, made discovery effortless, and allowed creators to add, preview, and sync effects seamlessly. The goal was to evolve Murf into a truly full-fledged audio creation platform.
challenge.
The biggest challenge in bringing sound effects to Murf was the limitation of its timeline. Murf used a single track line for audio, which meant users could not layer or stack multiple sounds, music, or effects on top of one another. Without a dynamic timeline, adding sound effects in a realistic and controlled way became difficult because everything had to fit into one linear track. To solve this, we had to explore multiple directions for evolving the timeline structure and rethink how the editor could support overlapping audio elements. Each potential path came with its own technical and design implications, which are detailed in the next sections.
result.
To solve this, I began by exploring how users would naturally discover and access the new sound effects feature, identifying the right entry points within the existing studio. I studied several other platforms through competitive analysis to understand common patterns, usability expectations, and opportunities to improve on what already existed in the market. Based on these insights, I created initial design directions and quickly moved toward a more robust concept that aligned with Murf’s workflow. Since the timeline update had to be delivered within a short period, I shifted early into high-fidelity design, focusing on building a solution that made adding, managing, and syncing sound effects feel seamless despite the limitations of the earlier single-track system.
